Shirley Ann Brashears Carter, 84, of Hendersonville passed away Thursday, June 16th at her home. Born September 30, 1937, in Pulaski, TN she was the daughter of the late Lightford V. Brashears and Edna Noah Brashears. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William F. Carter in 2010; and her brother Ray Brashears. Shirley was raised in Mt. Joy, TN and educated in Mt. Pleasant, TN. As a young woman she moved to Nashville where she met her late husband, William F. Carter. They were married in 1956. Being the wife of a career navy man, Shirley was the consummate navy wife. Together they raised their children from Midway Island all the way to the state of Rhode Island, with many different stops along the way. They settled in Hendersonville in 1971. She was a life-long member of the Church of Christ and for the past several years has been a member of the Luna Lane Church of Christ in Hendersonville. She and her late husband were avid bluegrass music fans and enjoyed attending many bluegrass music festivals. They also spent their summer vacations taking the family on road-trips from their home in California to Tennessee and Pennsylvania to visit relatives. Other pastimes that Shirley enjoyed were playing Bingo and spending time with her close network of friends, especially Judy McCreary, Sylvia Vest and Judy Yates. Shirley was a devoted wife, loving mother and a friend to all who knew her. She is survived by her children, Michael (Maria) Carter, David Carter, Terri (Steve) Capel, and; her seven grandchildren, Leanne, Haley, Katie, Devon, Wesley, Megan and James; her two great-granddaughters, Crosley and Camden; and her brother Ronnie Brashears.
