Martha Sipe

Martha Couch Sipe age 87 passed away March 30th, 2023. She was born on September 10, 1935, in Knoxville, TN daughter of the late Earl and Margaret Couch. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Norman Couch (Faye).

She is survived by her sons, Gary and Alan (Marianne); grandchildren, Lawren Satterfield, Wyatt, Will and Walker Sipe; and many nieces and nephews.

Martha became a Christian at age twelve and was a member of First Baptist Goodlettsville and the Ruth’s Sunday school class.  She was proud to be a descendant of the first families of East Tennessee on both her father (Couch) and mother (Campbell) sides of the families. Mrs. Sipe was a graduate of Goodlettsville High School c/o 53. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Science from UT and a Master of Education from TSU. She was the third generation in her family to graduate from UT and became a teacher in Shelby Co, private and Metro Nashville public school system.

After retiring from teaching, she enjoyed camping, traveling to 49 of the 50 states and living in Florida during the winter months. Once retiring she also began sewing blankets and knitting hats for Vanderbilt Hospital’s neonatal unit, meals on wheels and the grief ministry for church. Martha loved reading, her grandchildren, family time in the Great Smoky Mountains and the Gulf Shores each summer.

She realized her childhood dreams of being a wife, mother, teacher and graduating from UT! Martha was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority and Eastern Star. She and George enjoyed attending UT football and basketball games during the season. The campus and the mountains have always felt like home to them.

A visitation with the family will be held in Goodlettsville at Cole & Garret Funeral Home Chapel April 3rd, 2023, from 5pm -7pm and April 4th, 2023, at 10:30 am prior to the Celebration of Life starting at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers and memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital.
