Sherry Gail Lovell

October 21, 1936 — August 30, 2025

Sherry Gail Lovell, age 88, passed away on August 30th, 2025, at Alive Hospice in Nashville, TN. Sherry was born in Ridgetop, TN, on October 21st, 1936, to parents Clyde David Smiley and Geneva Mayes Smiley.

Sherry is preceded in death by her parents Clyde and Geneva Smiley and sister Myrtle Whiting. She is reunited in heaven with her son David Lovell, and her cherished husband of 35 years John Lovell. Sherry is survived by her son Jeffery Lovell, daughter-in-law Stacy Lovell, grandchildren: Elizabeth (Buck) Freeman, Samuel (Jessica) Lovell, and Tyler Blair, great grandchildren: Beau Freeman, Scout Freeman, Mack Freeman, Wilder Lovell and Olive Lovell. She is also survived by her siblings Betty White, Ted Smiley, Joan Hackney, and Brenda Moritz, as well as many nieces and nephews, with special thanks to her nieces Lisa Reasoner and Trena Bradshaw and nephews Steve White and Troy Smiley. Although she is gone, Sherry’s memory will forever reside within them all.

Sherry was a long-time member of the Highland Chapel Church in Ridgetop, TN. It was here that she was brought closer to her faith and found solace within her church community. She graduated from the Greenbrier High School Class of 1954. She was very proud of that fact and that she had remained friends with many members of her class throughout the years. She became one of the original booth owners at The Nashville Farmers Market. It was here where she became affectionately known as “The Sock Lady.” From 1975 onwards, Sherry worked diligently selling her wares for 50 years, until she was no longer able.

Sherry was known to be an excellent cook. So much so that family and friends were honored to join her at her table. Her family fondly recalls her delicious jam cake and her savory chicken dressing. When she wasn’t working at her booth at the farmers market or crafting delicious meals, Sherry enjoyed watching sports, particularly basketball. She was a huge fan of Michael Jordan, keeping lots of his memorabilia in her home. She also enjoyed listening to music, particularly the upbeat 1950’s rock sounds of Elvis Presley.

One of Sherry Lovell’s greatest and most proud accomplishments in this life would be her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to all who were blessed to know her. She was a proud member of the Smiley family; where love, loyalty, and respect were ingrained within her.
