Preceded in death by her grandparents, J.B. Jackson and Jesse B. Jackson; and James Harvey Woodall and Lillian Maude Woodall; parents, J.B. Jackson Jr. and Mavoline W. Jackson. Survived by her husband, Henry J. "Hank" Abbott, daughter, Allison B. (Shane) Rollins; brother, Barry (Marla) Jackson; cousins, Christy (Kevin) Hamilton.
Rita grew up on a working dairy farm in Goodlettsville, TN. She loved gardening, flowers, growing things, and all of nature's beauty. A lifelong educator, Rita invested her life in helping a broad spectrum of others, from students and their families to friends, strangers, and newcomers to America. She was a graduate of Goodlettsville High School, and MTSU (Masters Degree in Reading Instruction) and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. A staunch supporter of Vanderbilt athletics, including football, men's and women's basketball, and baseball.
Lovingly cared for by TN Oncology and Summit, St. Thomas West and Midtown, and Alive Hospice. Donations in Rita's honor may be made to the Goodlettsville High School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, PO Box 1707, Goodlettsville, TN 37070. A life well lived, Rita will be missed by many.
Visitation will be at Cole & Garrett Funeral Home, 127 N Main St., Goodlettsville Thursday from 4-8 pm. Memorial service will be at 11 am on Friday December 1 at Westminster Presbyterian Church 3900 West End Ave, Nashville, with visitation one hour prior to service time at the church.
