Mary Balser

Mary J. Balser, 79 of Greenbrier, passed away Friday, February 11, 2022. Born in LaFayette, TN June 10, 1942, Mary was the daughter of the late Drayton Shoulders and Selma Story Shoulders. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Marjorie Karnatz, Barbara Blansett, Shirley Schandelmeier, Jerry Shoulders and Jim Shoulders; and by nephews, Jamie Johnson, Michael Beech, and niece, Tina Thibideau. Mary had attended Hendersonville High School. Mary had worked as a seamstress at Roberta Lee clothing manufacturers early on in her marriage until the birth of her daughter. She reentered the work force later in life and had worked at the former Caster Knott and later Macy’s department stores. Mary’s retail career was driven by her love of shopping. She was a member of the Greenridge Church of Christ in Greenbrier and was an active volunteer. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the PTA as well as at church. She loved animals, especially her dog, Bella. A devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend, Mary is survived by her husband of over 56 years, James “J.D.” Balser; her daughter and son-in-law, Angela Beth Balser Heusser (Donavin); her step-grandchildren, Ava and Ian Heusser; her nieces and nephews, Chad Shoulders (Jessica), Paula Ross (Randy), Lisa Looper, Cynthia Norton (Kevin), Kathy Cunningham (Tommy), Anita Woodall (Lance), Yvonne Buckner, Tammy Jeffers (David), Jennifer Flatt; and her “best friend”, Barbara Jean Anderson. Visitation for Mary will be held at Cole & Garrett Funeral Home, Goodlettsville on Tuesday, February 15th from 10 AM until 2 PM. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 PM at the funeral home followed by interment at Springfield Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to ones’ favorite charity.
