William A. Doherty Jr. of Mount Juliet, TN passed away peacefully on Jan. 23rd 2014 at the age of 87.
William was born on Sept. 16th 1926 and raised in Germantown, PA near Philadelphia. He attended Germantown High School. Shortly after high school he entered the Army to serve his country in WWII. He fought in the Battle of Leyte where victory opened the door for the recapture of the Philippines.
After WWII he enrolled at Temple University in the ROTC program where he lettered in gymnastics and graduated with a degree in Business. He was an active brother in the Sigma Pi Kappa fraternity.
Once again he was called upon to serve his country, this time as an Army officer in the Korean War. There he was a lieutenant in charge of a supply corps.
After the Korean War he worked in Philadelphia as a Real Estate Broker before obtaining his insurance license and working for a large commercial insurance agency there. William then married Ms. Lemay (Lee) Cross of Upper Darby, PA and a short time later was transferred to the company's Pittsburgh office.
After a few years in Pittsburgh he transferred again, this time to Weirton, WV, home of the firm's largest customer, Weirton Steel Co. In Weirton his company grew rapidly and was eventually incorporated into the steel mills parent- National Steel Company. National Steel diversified and became National Intergroup and there he rose quickly through the ranks and eventually became the Director of Risk Management at their world headquarters in Pittsburgh. It was also at this time that he founded and was President of the Riverside Re-insurance Company of Hamilton Bermuda where he traveled frequently.
In the early 80's William became quite a student of nature. He attended many of Wheeling, WV's Oglebay Institute nature study camps and became an avid ornithologist. When not at the family summer house in the Pocono Mountains you could find William in the mountains of West Virginia. For many years he served as Secretary and Treasurer of the Steubenville, OH chapter of the Audubon Society.
In the late 90's he retired and in search of a warmer climate he moved his family to Nashville TN. Unfortunately in 1997 Lee passed away suddenly. After resolving to spend the rest of his life a widower he was very surprised and pleased in 2005 to meet Ms. Jacquelyn Schleicher. Jackie was a woman with whom he shared many traits, including the same birthday date. They chose this day, Sept 16th to wed and enjoyed many years together, living in Hermitage and then Mount Juliet, TN.
William is survived by wife Jackie Schleicher of Mount Juliet, TN, son William the 3rd of Raleigh, NC, son Robert of Nashville, TN, daughter Donna Bogner of Mt. Juliet, TN and grandchildren William the 4th, Hanna and Haley.
Services are planned at The Chapel of Maristone, 140 Providence Trail, Mount Juliet, TN 37122 on Monday the 27th at 3 pm.
