ELKINS, Dr. Larry Owen, age 69 of Hendersonville, August 25, 2007. Dr. Elkins was born September 28, 1937 in Old Hickory, TN to the late Ezra and Mazell Elkins. Dr. Elkins lived and worked in Fort Walton Beach, FL for 37 years before returning to Hendersonville, TN. Dr. Elkins graduated from Vanderbilt University with his B.S. in 1959, his M.S. in 1962 and his Ph.D. in 1966. He was in charge of the Research and Development Lab from 1965-67 with Air Force Systems Command, Air Force Armament Lab, Eglin AFB, FL; from 1965-72, he was Chief of high explosives processing labChemical Engineer; from 1972-77, he was Director of programs and support, Research and Development Labs. Dr. Elkins was a member of the Church of Christ. He will be remembered in this area for bringing in the Sojourners to help with the disaster relief after the tornado in 1998. He was a kind and caring gentleman, and his work and service to the church was most important to him. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Dr. Elkins is survived by his wife of 46 years, Patricia Jones Elkins; two sons, Larry DeWayne Laurie & Patrick Teri Elkins of Fort Walton Beach, FL; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Christopher, Alex, Dylan and Hope; and two brothers, Jack and Don Elkins of Knoxville, TN. Graveside services will be conducted 10 a.m. Thursday, August 30, 2007 in the Hermitage Memorial Gardens. Visitation with the Elkins family will be from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at HENDERSONVILLE FUNERAL HOME, 615 824-3855.
