Jean Spain

May 28, 1937 — November 18, 2022

Hendersonville

Jean Spain of Hendersonville passed away on November 18, 2022 surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Greenbrier, TN on May 28, 19something(do any of us really know when she was born?) to the late James and Pauline Mayes. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Billy Spain; her son, Darren Spain; her grandson, Blake Kurgan; and her brother, Danny Mayes.

Jean was a strong, creative and independent woman who owned her own business for many years. She was always willing to help others and serve where she could; PTA’s, Girlscouts, Nursing homes and her church, Long Hollow Baptist, where she was a faithful member.

Jean loved her family, especially her children and grandchildren. She was a devoted mother and Gram who loved spending time with them and supported them in every way. She was everyone’s biggest and loudest fan, she thought she was every coaches dream assistant and she was every umpire, referee or judges worse nightmare.

Jean loved life and lived it well and if there was ever anything to be celebrated, she turned the event in to an extravaganza. Christmas, Easter, Birthdays, Derby parties, Bunko, or just weekly lunches with the Glitzy Grannies, it was always a party filled with lots of laughter and mischievous pranks.

Jean is survived by her children, Kevin Spain, Penny (Jay) Hubbell, Nikki (Leslie) Kurgan, Tracey (Mike) Sullivan; grandchildren, Kevin (Ashley) Spain, Dara Spain, Meagan (Chasen) Rippy, Jayme (Hank) Bayer, Jordyn (Kyle) Steveson, Kolby Kurgan, Peyton Kurgan, Baylee Sullivan and Marlee Sullivan; Great grandchildren, Easton Spain and Ellie Spain; Favorite Child, Gunner, her dog and companion.

Jean was never silent about the love she had for the Lord and she wanted everyone to know they had a friend in Jesus. The light of Jesus shined brightly in her, around her, and through her. She will leave a huge void in the hearts of her children, grandchildren and friends but they find peace and comfort knowing she is with Jesus and they will all be together again.

A life celebration will be held at 12pm, November 22nd in the chapel of Cole and Garrett Funeral Home in Goodlettsville with burial at Mayes Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 3-7pm on Monday evening and again from 10am-12pm prior to the service on Tuesday. Honorary Pallbearers are the members of the Glitzy Grannies.

The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Barnes and her staff at TN Oncology and the compassionate staff of Alive Hospice for the wonderful care they gave to their mother.
